Anticipatory Set: Set up blender. Ask students what a blender is used for.
Objective: Today we are going to be making L-blends!
Input: What is a blend? A blend is two letters that when put together make one sound instead of two, “they blend together”. Ask students if they can come up with some L-blends. Let students come up to the front and put different L blends such as: bl, pl, cl, gl, fl, sl into the blender (they will be separate letters when the kids put them in ex: b and l). Then turn it on and after a second pull out the card that has the blend “blended” together (ex: bl).
Modeling: Put blends up on the white board. Ask students to say the sound that the blends make together. Then let students talk with a neighbor and come up with words to go with the blends. Write up one word for each blend on the board. Once students are confident, put them into groups of 4 or 5.
Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: In groups students will rotate to different L-blend posters and write words that go with that L-blend. Let students have one minute at each poster. After share some of the words that students came up with.
Independent Practice: Pass out L-blends worksheet. Have students start on the coloring side. Explain worksheet and then have students work independently (red light).
Closure: Ask students what is a blend? How can knowing blends help us when we read?
